We believe that positive multigenerational relationships are beneficial for all involved. Our Elderberries volunteer program brings in older generations and deepens our connection to our community while enriching the days of students, teachers and volunteers!

 

Join us this fall as an Elderberry, an adult volunteer in our Huckleberries (ages 3-5), Salmonberries (ages 6-11), and Wildlings (ages 10-13) classes at St. Edward State Park. Give the co-teachers short breaks during lunch and free play time and spend time with children in the forest in all weather conditions. Grandparents, friends and neighbors who like being around children and the outdoors are encouraged to apply.​

Available Volunteer Shifts:

Mondays: 12:00 - 1:30

Tuesdays: 12:30 - 1:30

Wednesdays:11:30 - 1:00

Thursdays: 12:30 - 1:30

Fridays: 12:30 - 1:15

*Classes run September to June

Information and Requirements

This role includes:​

  • Working and interacting with young children

  • Walking and standing for periods of time

  • One or more 45 minute - 90 minute shifts a week, with subs available for vacation/trips

  • Monthly 1 hour Elderberries meeting

​

Typical responsibilities:

  • Sub in for each co-teacher while they take a short break, the other co-teacher will be present to lead the class.

  • Help students get their lunches out.

  • Walk students to the bathroom.

  • Talk with students during lunch time.​​​​

  • Read to students during lunch or free time. 

​

Requirement:

  • Background checks are required for all adults working and volunteering at Heartwood.

​

​
